The Waynesboro Chapter was founded in 2020 and is one of the newest chapters of Virginia Organizing. Since the chapter was formed during a global pandemic, the chapter has learned new and creative ways to organize and build people power, as they actively worked on the chapter’s first campaign to improve tenant rights. Many of the city’s landlords are absentee, fail to maintain and improve their buildings, and charge unreasonably high rent costs compared to the area median income. The Waynesboro Chapter has asked the city to create an accessible tenant complaint hotline, and to establish a rental inspection program that holds landlords accountable and improves the existing affordable housing stock.
Since then, the chapter has stopped a 400-bed expansion of Middle River Regional Jail, shifted the regional discourse on the need for a rental inspection program run by the city, and held Know Your Rights workshops in support of the local immigrant community.
In 2025, the chapter began working on its second campaign to improve conditions for marginalized students in the Waynesboro Public School system. After gathering stories from former and current students, the chapter discovered that there was a considerable lack of accountability for harassment from teachers and peers. The chapter is organizing to improve conditions for marginalized students and to hold the school board and Waynesboro High School teachers accountable.
