Lawrence Donal Howerton Jr. is a native of Danville, Virginia, and currently resides in South Boston, Virginia. Since 2022, he has worked in low-to moderate-income housing, supporting individuals and families in accessing stable and affordable living conditions. He is an active member of the Halifax/South Boston Chapter and joined the Virginia Organizing State Governing Board in January 2026.
Lawrence currently serves as an outreach worker and Medicaid application assistant, where he helps community members navigate healthcare access and public benefit systems. His work is grounded in advocacy, service, and a deep commitment to equity for underserved populations.
He also has a strong passion for early childhood care and education, shaped by his own childhood experiences and the absence of accessible childcare in his early life. This personal history drives his dedication to policies and initiatives that support children, families, and caregivers, with the goal of ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive. Through Virginia Organizing he has been able to attend a national conference surrounding child care issues, advocate for child care funding at the General Assembly, and help to facilitate workshops and events to promote affordable child care.
