Newport News/Hampton Chapter Update – June 2026

We would like to highlight our chapter’s housing win and let folks know that we are continuing to engage our Peninsula community and invite others to join our chapter and grassroots efforts/community.

We would also like to thank the businesses that supported our “Housing Is A Human Right Campaign on the Peninsula, Housing First” campaign:

We worked towards bringing awareness of housing insecurity in our region. Countless hours were dedicated to this effort. We door knocked and asked community members about their concern on local issues. We heard concerns about slumlords or housing managers who were not making timely repairs. Tenants shared they were unable to been consider homeownership. The Newport News/Hampton Chapter decided to campaign on housing insecurity and homelessness. Neighbors who were directly impacted by this issue joined our efforts, becoming part of our chapter. We earned the support of other organizations. We advocated and spoke on the issue. Then, our community raised their voices, speaking at city council meetings, meeting with City Council in Newport News and Hampton, speaking with delegates on the issue, writing letters to the editor, rallying around this issue.

We are happy that Hampton City Council has planned in the budget for 2027 over 5 million on small homes.

We’d like to thank everyone who campaigned on this issue!
