Newport News, VA – Members of the Virginia Organizing Statewide Strategy Committee will be presenting at the Hampton Roads Social Justice Conference on Wednesday, April 15 at 2:45 p.m. at Christopher Newport University. They will share about the importance of restoration of voting rights for returning citizens, as well as discussing the constitutional amendment that is on the upcoming Virginia ballot in November. The presentation is a part of the organization’s ongoing statewide efforts to promote voter education, civic engagement, and voter registration.
Virginia Organizing has been fighting to end felony disenfranchisement for decades. Virginia is one of the only states that does not automatically restore voting rights to citizens with felony convictions, which the constitutional amendment that passed in the General Assembly this year would resolve. Virginia Organizing has been continuing to educate the public about how this historic vote will give a voice to those who have been silenced.
“It’s not just in the hands of the legislators now; it’s our time to show them what our rights mean to us,” said Duane Edwards of the Virginia Organizing State Governing Board.
Virginia Organizing’s presentation will be a part of a larger discussion of community engagement during the second day of the conference.
